Description

Immerse yourself in Montriond Lake's Frozen North setting as you take in the vast expanse of snow at the foot of immense cliffs…during the cold months Lake Montriond offers a dazzling winter coat thanks to a frozen layer of ice -- make sure you see it!
Lake Montriond was formed after a landslide from Nantaux, the peak to the north-west of the lake. Although there is some uncertainty about when this landslide happened (estimates vary from 300-400 years ago to 4500 years ago!) what is certain is that it created a natural dam in the river that ran along the valley floor and soon created the lake we see today. To counter variations in the level of water from spring to autumn, Montriond town hall embarked on the massive task of sealing the lake, in 1990. In winter, the lake co-exists comfortably with the surrounding ski resorts. It is after all a wintersports paradise in its own right, notably for cross-country ski enthusiasts. With skis on, the only sound is the snow sliding away underneath you, creating the ideal opportunity to enjoy this unspoilt and inspiring setting. Those looking for more action also head to Montriond Lake for ice-diving...Heading for the hole cut in the thick layer of ice, divers head down into another timeless world where the air bubbles dance away merrily...this is one icy experience to try right away!
